Kansas African American Affairs Commission makes controversial Mother's Day Facebook post

On Mother’s Day, the Kansas African American Affairs Commission (KAAAC) released a statement on their Facebook page regarding the holiday that was met with much controversy.

A lot of people were thrilled by the post and found it very touching.

Others did not like the sentiment as much and pushed back against it.

The Kansas Black Republican Council weighed in, also strongly opposing the post, stating,

“Wanting to do away with Mother’s Day because “there are so many women and men who have done the work and love of a mother” is communist propaganda designed to exploit your empathy to debase and abolish the family.
Moreover, statements like these that diminish the value and inherent nature of women are insulting and should be deleted.
Shame on KAAC for debasing mothers and women everywhere.”
Kansas Speaker of the House Rep. Dan Hawkins (R) went to Instagram, and made the following statement regarding the KAAAC’s post:
“If you needed another example of why the legislature overrode the Governor’s veto and made the Women’s Bill of Rights law. The Kelly/Toland administration thinks men can be mothers and “maybe we should change the name” of Mother’s Day.”
According to the mission statement on the KAAAC website, they “work to devise strategies to address public policy concerns of the African American community.” The commission also serves as a “conduit for programs, grants, research, and policy advice for state and local organizations while addressing needs for change that are unique to the African American Community in the state of Kansas.”
