Kansas politicians react to President Biden's State of the Union Address
On Thursday, March 7, President Joe Biden delivered his State of the Union Address. In his address, Biden gave remarks regarding continuing to support Ukraine against Russia, January 6th, the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and more. Some Kansas politicians representing the state at the federal level have provided remarks on Biden’s State of the Union Address. This is what they’re saying:
Sen. Roger Marshall (R)
Sen. Roger Marshall, M.D. spoke on Biden’s State of the Union Address on Wake Up America where he said Biden reminds him of an angry king that has ruled for 40 years. He was asked about the order of which Biden spoke on issues due to him speaking about Ukraine immediately in his speech, but taking over a half hour to mention the border crisis.
“One of my toughest challenges up here is to set the priorities,” Sen. Marshall said. “There are so many good things that we could work on, but for Joe Biden, obviously, he puts the Ukraine above the wellbeing of the United States and that’s been my point. That’s why I’ve said I will not support Joe Biden’s Ukraine funding until we secure our own border.”
Sen. Marshall also stated that Biden does not take responsibility for anything. He further released a press release on Biden’s State of the Union Address:
“Tonight, Joe Biden gave his final State of the Union address. America watched as he tried to rewrite history as part of a last-ditch effort to save his political future that’s in free fall.” Senator Marshall said. “The fact of the matter is, there is no amount of ‘spin’ Joe Biden can give that will hide the damage he’s done to our nation: destroying a recovering economy, a secure border, and an energy-independent nation. His vacuum of leadership has allowed war through weakness and empowered Russia, Iran, and the Chinese Communist Party to sow chaos throughout the world.”
“In Joe Biden’s America, we are less safe, and the American dream is further out of reach by the day,” Senator Marshall said. “Mr. President, actions speak louder than words, and your actions have proven you are not up for this job. November cannot come soon enough.”
Rep. Ron Estes (R-KS04)
Rep. Ron Estes went onto The Voice of Reason with Andy Hooser to give his reaction to Biden’s Address.
“This was the most partisan State of the Union that I’ve ever seen since the time I’ve been in Congress or even before that as well,” Rep. Estes said. “It was really just coming across as a campaign rally that he was trying to convince the Democrat base that he’s the candidate that they should be cheering around and it didn’t matter if he said stuff that was true or said stuff that wasn’t true. That was all part of the campaign schtick.”
Rep. Estes had written an op-ed about what Biden should mention in the Address prior to Biden giving the Address. Rep. Estes was asked about how his hopes versus the reality of the Address clashed.
“You think the whole purpose of the State of the Union is to talk about what’s going on in the country,” Rep. Estes said. “Instead, he focused on what I think is going to be their campaign pitch. Instead of standing on his record that Biden’s accomplished or failed at accomplishing over the last three years, he’s trying to attack and denigrate President Trump and anybody who might vote for President Trump, and that’s not what we should be doing. It’s certainly not reflective of the real, true State of the Union when you look at Bidenomics and that he brags about the pain and suffering that people are having when they go to the grocery store and go fill up their car with gas and seeing the open border. Just the thousands of people, I mean, in the month of December, there were almost as many as the population of Wichita. Over 320,000 people crossing the border illegally.”
Rep. Estes said he wished Biden would reverse tactics and reimplement some of Trump’s policies that were working when it comes to the border.
Rep. Sharice Davids (D-KS03)
Rep. Sharice Davids sent out an email the day after the State of the Union Address.
“I didn’t agree with everything the President said, but I did appreciate his commitment to bipartisan cooperation,” Rep. Davids wrote. “That’s a promise I intend to hold him to. I know Kansans are frustrated with partisan gridlock. The last thing anyone needs right now is more extremism in either party.”
Rep. Davids also mentioned being joined at the Address with Kansas veteran and small businessowner Brian Newton, who runs Morty’s, a food cart and catering business. She stated that Newton’s story was a great example of why she worked to pass the bipartisan SERV Act in the House to help veteran-owned businesses.
